Three Things to Look at When Purchasing Used Rims
Posted by in Uncategorized on November 17, 2009
Given how expensive new rims can be, it makes sense to shop around and see where you can get your best deal. However, when new rims are simply out of the question, a lot of people wonder whether it is feasible to purchase used rims. Not only do previously used rims offer a considerable cost discount to their out-of-the-box counterparts, but many of them are still in new-like condition. However, when purchasing used rims you will need to be a little more careful before you open up your wallet and shell out the cash.
Inspect For Chips, Scrapes
If you are considering purchasing used rims, you should inspect the physical state of each individual rim. Pay close attention to any chipping or scratches like curb rash, especially on the outside of the rim. This can provide tremendous insight into how the past or current owner treated the rims and whether they were involved any kind of accident. An owner who cared for the rims properly may still have some minor scrapes and scratches, but they would be minor.
As well, it is reasonable to expect to find scratching around the tips where careless or rookie tire installers may have had to dig rubber off the rim to replace worn or ineffective tires. However, such scrapes should be minimal and you should be cautious if you find true chips or actual dents in these typical areas.
Inspect Color
Take note of the coloring or fading. Rims should be treated like the most sensitive, exposed part of the car (often the hood or roof) meaning they need to be carefully and frequently cleaned. Even a small hint of yellow or caking can result in quick deterioration in the quality of the rims. In fact, a minor yellow tint is often a good indicator that the rims were not properly cared for and you, as the new owner, will be left dealing with the discoloration and having to replace those rims sooner than one might think.
Watch Out For Recently Refinished Rims
While flashy and appealing, recently refinished rims can be concealing a dangerous story underneath. The last thing you want is a cracked or seriously damaged rim; not only will not perform to your expectations but it could be a safety concern. Although some vendors (most likely commercial establishments) will automatically refinish rims, most individuals will sell rims as is, and this is a good thing as you can always have them refinished yourself if they pass your visual inspection.
If the rim is recently refinished, consider having them weighed. Each rim should be within a couple of ounces in weight of one another. A seriously damaged rim that has been refinished to hide devastating structural damage will typically weigh much more or less than its perfect counterparts.
While buying used rims poses some risks to the buyer, all it takes is a little more patience and observation to make sure you are not getting into something that you will later regret.
